Our first step in this case was to build an accurate digital 3d model based on the best available evidence to us. In many fatality cases, police will document the scene using a laser scanner, but in this case we just had a written police report accompanied by many photos.
After using the 3d model to test different scenarios for what may have happened, we can use it to create a series of rendered snapshots to illustrate key elements of the narrative:
-
The party attendance was estimated at over 100 people, most of whom had not been officially invited. Statements from multiple guests placed the start of the confrontation in the kitchen.
-
The victim was shot at the entrance of the house. Three bullets struck the passenger side of a nearby car.
-
The bullet cartridges collected at the scene were fired from two different hand guns.
-
A total of 17 spent bullet cartridges were collected from a wide area of the driveway.
-
The house was located at the end of a suburban cul-de-sac, and the only exit for both the shooters and fleeing guests was down the driveway. This narrative was supported by both the distribution of cartridges and statements from party-goers.
