Showing Up

Last week I attended a BBPDX member event where the question was asked, "What's the single most important thing you've done to be successful in business?" Of course there are many good responses to this question, but for me the answer is showing up.

I'm very conscious of the fact that introducing Fat Pencil's work to attorneys is, in effect, asking them to think differently about part of their practice. We want them to consider visual tools as a valuable asset at the beginning of a case, rather than waiting until trial is imminent before considering exhibits. When asking someone to consider a new idea, I've been most successful doing it in person. So Fat Pencil has, for the last eight years, hit the road to attend annual meetings of the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (OCDLA) in June, the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA) in August, and the Oregon Paralegal Association (OPA) in November. We are continuing the tradition this year, so if you are attending one of these meetings, please take a moment to visit our table!

Beyond conferences, we also do a variety of smaller educational & networking events every year. In 2019, we've already hosted an event for investigators focused on visualizing crime scenes, and one for paralegals focused on timelines. Our office has a great space for gatherings of 20-30 people. If you'd like to explore partnering with us to organize an event, please let us know!
